Foundational Written Health Communication
Welcome to Foundational Written Health Communication, the second module in the Foundational Health Literacy Training.
Everything we write for patients, consumers and the community shapes what they do next. An appointment letter, a discharge instruction, a form or a web page can decide whether someone acts on their care or misses it.
Understanding something is not the same as knowing what to do next. Writing clearly is not an extra task on top of safe care. It is part of it.
Who is this training for?
This module teaches the foundations of written health communication. It supports anyone who creates, reviews, or shares written health information.
Whether you are new to the topic or want a refresher, this module is for you.
The module takes about 40 minutes and you can complete it at your own pace.
What will I learn?
After completing this module, you will be able to:
- Recognise what makes written health communication clear and easy to use.
- Write for different audiences and communication needs.
- Use four lenses and practical tools to review and improve written health communication
Clear written communication supports the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards and the NSW Health Accessible Communications Policy. Improving health literacy and making health information and communication better is a key priority for NSW Future Health.
